Bernard Purdie is currently the most recorded drummer of all time, made famous for recording and touring with artists Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Marvin Gaye, Vulfpeck, Donny Hathaway, James Brown, B.B. King, Paul Butterfield, Larry Coryell, Miles Davis, Hall & Oates, Al Kooper, Herbie Mann, Todd Rundgren, Cat Stevens, Isaac Hayes, “Sweet” Lou Donaldson, Joe Cocker, and Hank Crawford.
He regularly produces his own solo albums as a groove drummer under his own name, making a record-breaking 3,000 albums to date.
Bernard Purdie was born in Elkton, Maryland, and later moved to New York. As the age limit was a minimum of 21 years of age to perform live, Bernard claimed he was born in 1939, when he was actually born in 1941. In New York, he played with Lonnie Youngblood before landing his first hit with King Curtis. His best-known track recorded with Aretha Franklin was “Rock Steady” in 1971.
Bernard released 5 albums with Encounter Records in 1973, a record company that he founded:
