So much time and energy goes into pairing hair and makeup with the outfits for our models. At Avanté Salon in Bradford Plaza, we knew that our models were in good hands. I talked to Angie who styled Dina’s hair from Blink.
“The inspiration for me was seeing how flowery her dress was,” Angie said. “It was a
lot of fun doing up her dreadlocks. I love doing everyone’s hair and making them look their best!”
Rebecca, the hair stylist for Bri from Tish, added some extra flair to her look with
glitter.
“Adding the glitter definitely made her hair more special,” she said. “And it was cool working
alongside makeup artists and creating a look together for her.”
Rebecca has been working at Avanté now for three years and was inspired to join the beauty industry in high school when she would stop by her aunt’s salon in Delaware County every day after school.
When Jazlyn from H. Rose had her hair done, Risa knew she wanted to create a more subdued look to contrast the bright, royal blue jumpsuit she would be wearing.
“I knew that something simple would complement the look she was going for,” Risa said. “The curls I did were modern, fun, and bouncy which I knew she could have fun with while shooting.”
It was clear to me that Risa loves creating Jazlyn’s look on other clients too.
“That’s one of the most popular styles my clients ask for,” she said. “It’s my favorite to do because most of my clients look at me and say, ‘Wow, I could never do this,’ when in reality, it’s so simple and a very wearable and practical hairstyle.”
Now, Risa has been styling at Avanté for almost two years. The dream she had of becoming a hairstylist when she was 16 and taking night classes every day after high school has paid off!
Finally, I talked to Katharine, who did the makeup for Dina, Bri, and Jazlyn from Blink, Tish, and H. Rose. She described creating the looks for each one of them.
“I based the looks off of what they were wearing, and their eye and hair color and bone structure,” Katharine said. “So for Jazlyn, I did a cut crease, for Bri, I did a darker, sparkly, smoky eye because she was wearing something formal, and you want to stand out, and be sparkly, but not too crazy.”
“And Dina was so naturally radiant,” Katharine continued. “So I did a light contour and the most natural smoky eye on her because with the yellow flowers in her hair, I didn’t want to take away from the hair and outfit.”
The best part of working at Avanté for Katharine over the past two years has been working for Frank Gruber, the owner.
“I’ve never had a boss as personable as him,” she said. “He always takes time to hear us out when we want to try new things and doesn’t question us.”
Having that sort of creative freedom is what she really loved about doing the makeup for these photo shoots.
“Dan [the publisher] pretty much said I could do whatever I wanted,” Katharine said. “So it was a lot of fun being creative with them!”
