Spotlighting 2017
In light of our upcoming year of brand new themes, I would like to highlight five of our best features from 2017.
January 2017 — Multicultural Issue
We kicked off last year with an examination of West Chester’s cultural landscape. In “Diverse Outlooks,” writer Jesse Piersol spoke with some of our favorite business owners about the diversity they bring to the borough.
In 1973, Alice Thomas formed Henderson’s Black Student Union.
Ming Chen’s grandfather was head chef at Nobu in New York.
The Nieves brothers’ enthusiasm for community-building is contagious.
April 2017 — Homemade Issue
Writer Kate Chadwick talked with Mike Brazill from Brazill Creative Works, Steve McCardell of Prowler Bat Company, and Gregg Marvel from Marvel Woodworking about how they’re making their creative woodworking dreams into a reality, embracing what they love, and monetizing it.
“Growing up, I was always around tools and building stuff. I have an uncle who was a contractor/builder, and another who was a world-class wood carver. Once I picked up my first chisel set, I was hooked” — Mike Brazill.
“I remember cutting grass on the farm and just thinking about the bat company” — Steve McCardell.
“It started in high school with wood shop. I bought my woodworking tools back in 2000 and was just doing it as a hobby” — Gregg Marvel.
May 2017 — The Bride Guide to West Chester
You don’t need to travel to some exotic location to get married when you can enjoy a local marriage in your favorite borough. Need a dress? Need dance lessons? Need a venue? Everything you need to plan the wedding is right here. You can support local businesses and get the most out of your wedding in West Chester.
September 2017 — Edible West Chester
We love our guides, so here’s another one: in September, we submitted a Cook Book featuring the very best recipes from nearly 30 different restaurants, bars, and eateries. So, not only can you enjoy some delicious food locally for dinner, but you can also make it yourself (though, we recommend enjoying their food out in town, it adds flavor to the experience).
November 2017 — Fresh Brew
And what goes best with the food from our September issue? Beer! Dan Mathers wrote about the Business of Beer at Levante Brewing Company in our November Fresh Brew issue. Dan spoke with co-founders and brothers-in-law, Tim Floros and Eric Santostefano about Levante’s background and what makes brewing beer so special.
“If the liquid isn’t great, don’t bother opening a brewery” — advice from a former boss that Tim has applied to his own work.
“We honestly didn’t expect the demand for our beers to grow like it did. We were planning for a much steadier growth curve but we couldn’t be happier with how things are going” — Tim Floros
