This folk and blues singer is known his profound impact on the American music scene. He assisted in shaping the folk music revival of the 1960s, and its renaissance in the 1980s and 1990s. Earlier in his music career, he performed covers of famous songs from artists Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor. Since his music career took off, he has influenced generations of folk and blues artists, including James Taylor, Emmylou Harris, Tom Petty, and Garth Brooks.
Road to World-Renown:
Tom Rush began performing folks and blues songs in 1961 when he was studying at Harvard University as an English literature major. Along with early covers of Joni Mitchell songs, he also covered cultural songs from the Lowland Scots and Appalachian. Tom’s 1968 composition, “No Regrets,” prompted numerous cover versions and lots of publicity. Singers like The Walker Brothers, Emmylou Harris and Midge Ure covered the song — and even Tom himself composed two different versions of it.
Throughout his musical career, Tom has regularly performed at Cambridge’s Club 47 Coffee House, (which is now called Club Passim); the Unicorn in Boston; and The Main Point in Bryn Mawr.
On March 1, 2007, his performance of Steve Walters’ “The Remember Song” went viral on YouTube. As of now, it currently as 7.2 million views.
“Tom is now celebrating his 52nd year on stage and in the studio, still doing what audiences love him for: writing and playing …passionately, tenderly…knitting together the musical traditions and talents of our times” — Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center
